The Pandeiro Problem

This page describes the so-called "Pandeiro" problems. These problems are supervized audio classification problems. They were described in several papers, as well as results obtained using feature generation techniques. We provide the data here as a reference for those interested in trying to find better solutions (in particular to the attack problem, see below).

The Pandeiro is a Brazilian percussion instrument that is able to produce six categories of sounds described below. This study was initially developed during the Ph.D. of Sergio Krakowski, who uses the Pandeiro to control in real time computer music software.

DOWNLOAD THE DATA

Tung: Bass sound, also known as open sound;

Ting: Higher pitched bass sound, also open;

PA (big pa): A slap sound, close to the Conga slap;

pa (small pa): A medium sound produced by hitting the Pandeiro head in the center. Also considered as a slap, but softer;

Tchi: The jingle sound;

Tr: A tremolo of jingle sounds;

The attack problem

The classification of complete sounds is a relatively easy task. However, the application targeted is an interactive music system in which we need to classify sounds in real time. As a consequence we cannot use complete sounds to classify each stroke. Instead, we classify using only the ATTACK PORTION of the sound.

The attack is defined by an amplitude threshold: when the amplitude goes above the threshold, the attack begins, and it goes under, the attack ends.

We provide here both the database of full sounds and the database of “attacks only”.
